Carrick and Fernandes Fume at “Baffling” Penalty Calls as Man Utd Drop Points

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes hit out at “astonishing” officiating after VAR drama and a Harry Maguire red card saw them held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth.

BOURNEMOUTH — Manchester United’s charge toward a top-three finish hit a controversial roadblock on Friday night, as a pulsating 2-2 draw with Bournemouth left manager Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes “incandescent” over what they perceived as blatant officiating inconsistency.

The Spark of the Fury

The flashpoint occurred in the 67th minute—a sequence that fundamentally altered the trajectory of the match. With United leading 1-0 thanks to a Fernandes penalty, Amad Diallo appeared to be bundled over in the area by Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert. Referee Stuart Attwell waved away the appeals, and VAR deemed the contact “insufficient.”The frustration turned to fury just seconds later. As United players were still remonstrating, Bournemouth launched a devastating counter-attack. Truffert, the man at the center of the penalty shout, provided the assist for Ryan Christie to sweep home the equalizer.

Carrick: “One of them must be wrong”

Speaking to the press after the match, Michael Carrick did not hold back. Usually a figure of measured calm, the United boss described the officiating as “baffling.”

”To give one and not give the other, I just can’t get my head around it—it’s crazy,” Carrick said. “One is rewarded as a penalty, the other not. It’s astonishing, I have to say. One of them must be wrong.”

Carrick’s ire was particularly aimed at the fact that Bournemouth was later awarded a penalty for a challenge by Harry Maguire on Evanilson—an incident that also saw Maguire sent off. To the United dugout, the manual tug on Evanilson was identical to the one ignored on Amad minutes earlier.

Fernandes Laments “Small Player” Bias

Bruno Fernandes, who converted his own spot-kick with typical composure, was equally vocal. The Portuguese international suggested that the stature of the player might have influenced the decision.”I think the situation with Amad is a penalty, and that could’ve changed the game,” Fernandes fumed. “One is rewarded, the other is not. It’s hard to make sense of it. Because they score immediately after, the game flips.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the dropped points, United remain in third place with a six-point cushion over fifth-place Liverpool. However, the loss of Maguire to a one-match suspension—set to be served after the three-week international break—adds a defensive headache for Carrick as he prepares for the run-in toward Champions League qualification. The “Vitality Vendetta” will likely dominate the headlines throughout the break, as United heads into a 24-day hiatus before facing Leeds.
