Nico O’Reilly named Premier League’s Young Player of the Season

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly has been named the Premier League Young Player of the Season, crowning a sensational breakthrough campaign that has seen the 21-year-old transform from academy prospect into one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.

The prestigious award caps a remarkable 24 hours for the boyhood City fan, who was also voted the club’s youngest-ever Player of the Season by supporters, alongside picking up the Premier League Academy Graduate of the Year accolade. It is a fitting conclusion to a year of astonishing personal growth for the Manchester-born prodigy, who has become an indispensable figure in the final chapter of Pep Guardiola’s historic reign at the Etihad Stadium.

O’Reilly’s meteoric rise is a footballing fairytale rooted in exceptional versatility. Standing at an imposing 6ft 4in, the natural attack-minded midfielder spent the majority of the season adapting seamlessly to an entirely new left-back role under Guardiola’s tactical guidance. Far from a defensive makeshift, O’Reilly has played with the elegance and composure of a veteran, featuring in 34 Premier League matches, contributing five goals and three assists, and helping City sustain a relentless title challenge behind eventual champions Arsenal.

His unique ability to step inside and drive into advanced central areas has drawn glowing praise across the footballing world, with former City defender Micah Richards describing him as “the closest thing to a Rolls Royce of a football player at that age.”
While his league performances laid the groundwork for this latest individual honour, it was under the Wembley arch where O’Reilly truly etched his name into first-team folklore. He showcased his incredible knack for the big occasion in March, netting a decisive second-half brace from left-back to secure a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the EFL Cup final.

He followed that up by helping City secure further silverware in the FA Cup final triumph against Chelsea. In total, the tireless youngster has played in 53 matches across all competitions this term—more than any other player in the star-studded Manchester City squad—demonstrating a level of physical and mental resilience rarely seen in a breakout campaign.

Outgoing manager Pep Guardiola was unreserved in his praise for the academy graduate, labeling his form this season as “extraordinary” and highlighting his tactical intelligence across multiple positions as a defining factor in his selection for the award. O’Reilly’s rapid ascent has not escaped the attention of national selectors either. Having been fast-tracked into the senior England setup by manager Thomas Tuchel for his international debut against Serbia late last year, the versatile star has officially been included in the Three Lions’ 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

From joining the club’s academy at the age of eight to being named the brightest young talent in the toughest league in the world, O’Reilly’s journey serves as a shining example for the next generation at the City Football Academy. With a domestic cup double in his pocket, a World Cup on the horizon, and the Premier League Young Player of the Season trophy to his name, the future looks incredibly bright for Manchester’s newest footballing superstar.
