Goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a masterclass performance of breathtaking defiance to earn Curaçao a historic first-ever World Cup point as they held a frustrated Ecuador to a goalless draw in Kansas City.
The Caribbean tournament debutants, the smallest nation by population ever to grace the global stage, entered the match needing to restore pride after a bruising 7-1 opening defeat to Germany. Instead, they walked away from Arrowhead Stadium with a legendary result written into football folklore, courtesy of Room’s record-breaking 15 saves—the most in a non-extra-time World Cup match since 1966.
Ecuador, heavily backed by a sea of yellow in the stands, completely dominated possession and registered a relentless 28 attempts on goal. They signaled their intent inside three minutes when Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo carved open the defense with an exquisite aerial pass, releasing veteran captain Enner Valencia one-on-one, only for Room to make a brilliant smothering save that set the template for the evening.
La Tricolor continued to attack in waves. John Yeboah tested the Curaçao custodian after a sparkling solo run, while Pedro Vite saw a curling effort shave the post. Before the break, Room was called into action three more times, spectacularly denying Gonzalo Plata and another close-range effort from Valencia.
Dick Advocaat’s Curaçao side grew in defensive confidence as the match progressed, though they had to survive a brief scare when Juninho Bacuna was forced off through injury. The heroic draw keeps Curaçao’s fairytale alive ahead of their final Group E match against Ivory Coast, where a win could improbably see them reach the knockout phase. Ecuador, however, are left to rue a mountain of missed opportunities.
