Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick reached a new milestone on Monday night as Benjamin Šeško came off the bench to secure a gritty 1-0 victory over Everton.
In a match that embodied the grit and tactical pragmatism of the Michael Carrick era, Manchester United secured a vital 1-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday night. The hero of the hour was once again Benjamin Šeško, whose clinical second-half strike ensured United leapfrogged Chelsea and Liverpool to reclaim fourth place in the Premier League.
The win extends United’s remarkable unbeaten run under interim boss Michael Carrick to six matches (five wins, one draw), as the Red Devils continue their ascent following the mid-season departure of Ruben Amorim.
The contest began with the high intensity expected of a night match on Merseyside. Everton, desperate to end a seven-game winless run at their new home, nearly caught United sleeping within seconds. A casual clearance from young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens was charged down by Thierno Barry, with the ball trickling agonizingly wide of the post.
United responded with a fluid front line of Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha, but they found clear-cut chances hard to come by against a disciplined Everton backline.
The first half ended goalless, with United dominating possession (62%) but Everton looking the more threatening on the counter-attack.
As the second half progressed and the game appeared to be heading toward a stalemate, Michael Carrick made the decisive move. In the 58th minute, he withdrew Amad Diallo for Benjamin Šeško, the 22-year-old Slovenian who has rapidly become United’s “Super Sub.” The breakthrough finally arrived in the 71st minute via a textbook counter-attack:
“I believe in me and so do the other players,” Šeško told Sky Sports. “They know what they are going to get when I arrive in the game. It’s up to me to deliver.”
Following the goal, David Moyes’ men threw everything forward. Everton won a staggering 10 corners in the final twenty minutes, frequently targeting Michael Keane and Jarrad Branthwaite in the air.
However, Senne Lammens—awarded Player of the Match—proved unbeatable. The 23-year-old made a world-class reflex save to tip a Keane header over the bar and denied late substitute Tyrique George from distance. United’s defense, anchored by Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire, held firm through six minutes of stoppage time, even as Bruno Fernandes picked up a late yellow card for a tactical foul to halt a final Toffees surge.
For Everton, the defeat leaves them in 9th place, three points adrift of the European spots and still searching for their first win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this calendar year. For Manchester United, the Carrick “bounce” shows no signs of flattening. With Šeško having now scored six goals in his last seven appearances (three as a substitute), United look like the most in-form team in the race for the Champions League.
