Hojlund: ‘I’ve rediscovered the joy of football since leaving Man Utd

Napoli striker Rasmus Hojlund says he “never stopped believing” in his ability after admitting he feared his top-level career was “over” during the final months of his spell at Manchester United.
The 23-year-old Danish international joined the Italian giants on an initial loan deal last summer after a difficult second season at Old Trafford, where he managed just four Premier League goals
Under the guidance of Antonio Conte, Hojlund has undergone a dramatic transformation, scoring 14 goals in all competitions this term to help Napoli to third in Serie A.
“Here at Napoli, I’ve rediscovered the joy of playing football,” Hojlund told Danish broadcaster TV2.
“At one point [at United], it felt like it was over for me. People back home were writing me off, but I always believed I could get back to this level.”
Hojlund’s departure came during a period of significant upheaval at Manchester United. Following the arrival of Ruben Amorim and a string of attacking reinforcements—including Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha—the Dane found himself on the periphery
He revealed that being left out of the squad for the opening game of the 2025-26 season against Arsenal was the “turning point” that convinced him to move.
“I was put in a bit of a box at the end in Manchester,” Hojlund added. “I knew there wouldn’t be much football for me if it continued like that. I got what I wanted with this transfer—a team and a coach who actually want me.”
The Conte effect
The move to Naples has reunited Hojlund with former United teammates Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, creating a familiar environment that has seen him flourish. Napoli hold an obligation-to-buy clause worth approximately £43m—triggered by Champions League qualification—and sporting director Giovanni Manna has already confirmed the club’s intent to make the move permanent.
Analysis: A striker reborn

In Italy, Conte has built a system that plays to his strengths: verticality and hold-up play. With 10 league goals already this season, Hojlund has already surpassed his best-ever league return for a single club.
