Roberto de Zerbi: Tottenham appoint former Brighton and Marseille boss as new manager

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi as their new head coach on a five-year contract.

The 46-year-old Italian succeeds interim boss Igor Tudor, who lasted just 44 days in the dugout following the departure of Thomas Frank in February. De Zerbi, who has been out of work since leaving Marseille last month, has been tasked with an immediate and daunting priority: securing Tottenham’s Premier League status.

Spurs currently sit 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone with seven games remaining.

“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world,” De Zerbi said. “Our short-term priority is to climb the table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season.”

‘The number one target’

The appointment marks the end of a chaotic period for Chairman Daniel Levy, who has seen the club’s identity blurred by a rapid succession of tactical shifts. After the “Ange-ball” era ended in 2025, the club struggled to find a consistent rhythm under Frank or the short-lived Tudor.

Sporting Director Johan Lange revealed that De Zerbi had been the club’s primary choice to take over this summer, but the gravity of their current league position forced an acceleration of those plans.

“Roberto was our number one target for the summer and we are very pleased to be able to bring him in now,” Lange said. “He is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football.”

Analysis: A high-stakes gamble on ‘De Zerbi-ball’

This is the ultimate “boom or bust” appointment. For a club teetering on the edge of the unthinkable—relegation—bringing in a manager who demands such a complex, high-risk style of play is a massive roll of the dice.

De Zerbi’s football is beautiful when it works—we saw that at Brighton and Sassuolo—but it requires bravery, precision, and, crucially, time. Time is the one thing Tottenham do not have. With seven games left to save their season, the Italian must decide whether to compromise his philosophy to grind out points or double down on the possession-based “baiting” of the press that made him a global coaching star. The five-year contract suggests Daniel Levy is finally looking at the “project” again, rather than the quick fix. But if De Zerbi cannot navigate this immediate storm, that project will be starting in the Championship.

What the fans are saying

The reaction from the Spurs faithful has been a mixture of relief and trepidation. While the De Zerbi brand of football is a natural fit for the “To Dare Is To Do” motto, the timing of his arrival has raised eyebrows

“It’s the right man, but maybe the wrong time,” says The Fighting Cock podcast. “We need a firefighter, and we’ve hired an architect. But if he keeps us up, the sky is the limit next season.”

De Zerbi’s first game in charge will be a daunting trip to face title-chasing Manchester City this weekend. It is a baptism of fire that will immediately test whether his new squad can adapt to the most demanding tactical system in Europe.
