Burnley 0-1 Manchester City: Haaland strike sends City top and relegates Clarets

Erling Haaland’s early goal was enough to send Manchester City to the summit of the Premier League and condemn Burnley to relegation on a night of contrasting emotions at Turf Moor.
The Norwegian striker struck his 35th goal of a prolific campaign after just five minutes, slotting home following a slick interchange with Jeremy Doku. While City dominated the shot count—registering 28 attempts in total—they were unable to add a second, hitting the woodwork twice through Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki.
The victory sees Pep Guardiola’s side leapfrog Arsenal to lead the table on goals scored, with both teams level on 70 points and an identical goal difference of +37.
For Burnley, the defeat seals their return to the Championship after just one season in the top flight. Despite a spirited performance in front of a defiant home crowd, the Clarets lacked the quality to break down a City defense anchored by the returning Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City find a way as the pressure mounts
Coming into this game in hand following their crucial victory over Arsenal at the weekend, City knew that any win would be sufficient to seize control of the title race.
They began with the intent of a team sensing silverware. The breakthrough arrived early when Doku intercepted a loose pass in midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted through-ball into the path of Haaland. The striker made no mistake, dinking a neat finish over the oncoming Martin Dúbravka.
At that stage, a rout looked likely. Rayan Cherki, a constant menace on the flank, saw a stinging effort tipped onto the post by Dúbravka, while Antonine Semenyo fired over from point-blank range shortly after the interval.
“In these types of games, if you score the second or third you deserve, everything is more fluid,” said Pep Guardiola. “But the main target was winning the game. We are top of the league.”
Heartbreak for the Clarets
Burnley did not go down without a fight. Jaidon Anthony forced a magnificent fingertip save from Donnarumma early on, and the home side continued to “plug away” even as City’s dominance of possession grew.
However, the lack of a clinical edge that has plagued their season was evident once more. As the final whistle blew, confirmation of their relegation was met with a mix of applause for the effort shown and the somber reality of a season that ultimately fell short.
