Official: Sunderland Sign Belgian International Thomas Meunier on Free Transfer
Sunderland have officially announced the signing of Belgian international right-back Thomas Meunier on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Ligue 1 side Lille. The 34-year-old defender has agreed to a two-year contract with the club and has been assigned the number 12 shirt for the upcoming campaign.
Meunier brings a wealth of elite-level experience to the squad, boasting over 550 club appearances alongside 83 caps for the Belgian national team, whom he recently represented at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Over a highly decorated career, the veteran defender has featured for prestigious European clubs including Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and Trabzonspor, capturing numerous domestic league and cup titles in both Belgium and France.
Sunderland’s sporting director, Florent Ghisolfi, expressed his delight at securing the Belgian’s signature, highlighting that Meunier’s vast experience will inject crucial quality, leadership, and professionalism into the squad both on and off the pitch.
Speaking on the move, Meunier shared his excitement about joining the club, noting that the opportunity to compete in the Premier League was a challenge he eagerly anticipated.
