Popovic showed his tactical hand prior to kick-off by making six changes to the side beaten by the USA, bringing in the experience of Jackson Irvine and deploying Jordan Bos in an advanced wing-back role. Paraguay, heavily criticised after conceding four in their tournament opener, prioritised a low defensive block, leaving bright spark Julio Enciso completely isolated up front. It took a structural switch to a back-three at half-time by coach Gustavo Alfaro to finally spark the South Americans into life.
