Nagelsmann resigns as Germany boss after World Cup exit
Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany manager following the country’s disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup.
The 38-year-old confirmed his departure after a period of reflection and talks with close associates and officials from the German Football Association (DFB).
Germany suffered an early elimination from the tournament, prompting Nagelsmann to decide that a “fresh start” is needed for the national team.
In an official statement, Nagelsmann said: “Since the moment of our elimination, I have thought a lot and consulted with people I trust personally, as well as with officials in the federation. This decision was not easy for me at all. My priority has always been the success of the team, and after this painful disappointment, I believe the national team deserves a chance for a fresh start.”
Nagelsmann, who took over the national side in September 2023, expressed his gratitude to those who supported him during his tenure, including his backroom staff and the playing squad.
”I would like to thank my coaching staff, the support team, and everyone at the federation who supported us,” he added. “I also extend a special thanks to the players I had the honor to work with. I am also grateful to the fans who supported us and gave us confidence and energy, even in the toughest moments.”
The former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig boss concluded with an apology to the German supporters after failing to replicate past tournament successes.
”I am truly sorry that we let you down, and that we could not provide you with more unforgettable football nights in this tournament. You deserved much more.”
