The curtain came down on the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season on Sunday in typically dramatic French fashion with a pitch invasion, last-gasp European heartbreak, a remarkable relegation escape and a stinging defeat for champions Paris Saint-Germain. From Brittany to the Côte d’Azur, barely a ground was left without a storyline, and not all of them were pleasant.

Paris Saint-Germain had already mathematically secured a record-extending fourteenth title with one match to spare, following their 2-0 win against closest competitors Lens on 13 May. But if the champions thought they could cruise into the summer, their neighbours had other ideas.

PSG Stunned by Local Rivals Paris FC

Champions Paris Saint-Germain lost 2-1 across the road at local rivals Paris FC, a result made worse by a first-half injury to Ousmane Dembele a major concern ahead of the Champions League final against Arsenal on 30 May.

It was a bittersweet evening in the capital the title already secured, but Dembélé’s fitness now casting a long shadow over the biggest game of the season. PSG will hope the coming days bring better news from their medical room.

Champions League: Lille & Lyon Hold On Despite Losses

Lille and Lyon were beaten on the final day of the Ligue 1 season but still qualified for the Champions League next term. With their win over Lille, AJ Auxerre secured their place in Ligue 1 for next season a result that simultaneously saved one club and left another in a frantic late check of other scoreboards.

Lille’s defeat mattered little in the context of Champions League qualification, though it was far from the send-off they would have wished for.Second-placed Lens thumped Lyon 4-0 to finish their campaign in style, a result that summed up a remarkable season for the Northerners, who end the campaign as confirmed Champions League participants.

The final Ligue 1 standings confirmed PSG top on 76 points, Lens second on 70, Lille third on 61 and Lyon fourth on 60, with all four clubs securing European competition’s premier club tournament.

Europa League: Marseille’s Stunning Turnaround

The evening’s most exhilarating European drama unfolded at the Vélodrome, where Marseille produced a statement performance to gate-crash the top five.

Marseille’s 3-1 defeat of Rennes saw them leapfrog the latter into fifth place and qualify for the Europa League next season, at the same time ending Rennes’ hopes of a top-four finish. Goals from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Amine Gouiri and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the impressive win.

Stade Rennais finish sixth and will also play in European competition, in the Conference League, a result that still represents a respectable end to their campaign despite the Marseille heartbreak

Relegation Drama: Nice in Playoff, Le Havre EscapeNice’s Nightmare Night

Nice’s Nightmare Night

OGC Nice endured a final day to forget, their long top-flight tenure now hanging by a thread. OGC Nice, held at home by an FC Metz side already relegated to Ligue 2, will have to face AS Saint-Étienne over two legs in an attempt to stay in the top flight of French football.

Nice have been in Ligue 1 since the 2002-03 season and needed a win over bottom side Metz, and for other results to go their way, to move out of the bottom three. Neither happened. A club of Nice’s stature facing the indignity of a relegation playoff is one of the starkest images of this entire French football season

Le Havre Survive with Away Win

Le Havre, away at Lorient, won 2-0, a result that allows the Normandy club to escape 16th place, which leads to the relegation playoff. The win confirmed their top-flight survival and condemned Nice to the playoff place instead in one of the afternoon’s crucial late swings.

Already Gone: Nantes and Metz

Nantes and Metz had already been relegated before the final day, leaving Nice, Auxerre, and Angers to battle it out to avoid the relegation playoff place. As it turned out, Auxerre saved themselves by stunning Lille, while Le Havre’s win at Lorient did the rest.

Ugly Scenes: Nantes v Toulouse Abandoned

The darkest chapter of an eventful day unfolded in Brittany, where the spirit of sport was abandoned long before referee Stéphanie Frappart made it official.

Dozens of Nantes supporters, some wearing balaclavas, breached security barriers and entered the pitch at the Stade de la Beaujoire after just 22 minutes, with the score 0-0. Ugly scenes followed as supporters threw flares and players were ushered off the field, while Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic attempted to confront the fans and persuade them to leave.

There were emotional scenes as Halilhodzic was held back as he tried to talk to the ultras, with the Bosnian on the verge of tears at what he was seeing. The 74-year-old spent five years at Nantes as a player and also served as their manager between 2018 and 2019. He had come out of retirement to try and help the club avoid relegation, but was unable to turn their fortunes around.

Referee Stéphanie Frappart stated in an official declaration: “The decision to permanently stop the match was made based on the prefect’s order and for security reasons.”

This fan unrest came at a challenging time for Nantes, as their relegation to the second division had already been officially confirmed. Despite the club’s rich history having won the French league title eight times and the Coupe de France on four occasions their journey in the domestic competition concluded with scenes of indiscipline that necessitated the intervention of security forces.

French football’s governing body, the LFP, is expected to launch an immediate investigation and Nantes face the very real prospect of sporting sanctions.

What Happens Next

Nice will face AS Saint-Étienne over two legs in an attempt to stay in the top flight of French football. It is a tie that carries enormous weight for Nice, it is a battle to preserve 23 years of continuous top-flight football.

For Saint-Étienne, it is a chance to return to the elite at the expense of one of the country’s more glamorous clubs.

As for PSG, their attention now turns firmly to the Champions League final against Arsenal on 30 May, though the injury to Dembélé looms large over their preparations. A fifth straight Ligue 1 title is secured. European immortality, however, remains up for grabs.
