Ligue 1 title showdown postponed as PSG handed Champions League boost

The LFP has officially postponed the top-of-the-table clash between Paris Saint-Germain and RC Lens, originally scheduled for 11 April, to assist PSG’s Champions League preparations.

The decision, announced on Thursday morning, moves the fixture to 13 May. It comes after a week of heated debate between the two clubs and the French league authorities (LFP).

The LFP board of directors voted to reschedule the match to give PSG additional recovery time between their two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool (8 and 14 April). In a statement, the LFP explained the decision was part of a “clear strategic aim” to help French clubs perform in Europe.

“These decisions are in line with the board of directors’ aim of enabling France to retain its fifth place in the UEFA coefficient rankings, which secures four places in the UEFA Champions League.”

Strasbourg’s visit to Brest has also been moved to the same date in May to support their Europa Conference League quarter-final against Mainz.

Lens ‘fiercely opposed’ to the change

The decision has been met with significant frustration from RC Lens. The northern club, who currently sit just one point behind leaders PSG, argued that the postponement compromises the integrity of the title race.

In a strongly worded statement earlier this week, Lens expressed concern that the domestic league is being treated as a “mere variable” for elite clubs.

  • The Argument: Lens claimed the move would leave them without a competitive match for 15 days, followed by a congested schedule of three games in one week.
  • The Stance: Club president Joseph Oughourlian called the decision a blow to “equal opportunity” among French clubs.

A Repeat Strategy?

This is not the first time PSG has benefited from such a move. Earlier this season, their match against Nantes was postponed to help them prepare for a Round of 16 tie against Chelsea—a match PSG eventually won 8-2 on aggregate.

What’s next?

The title race now faces a period of uncertainty, with PSG holding a game in hand over their rivals. Lens has the right to appeal the decision to the French Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), though the LFP’s board has full authority over the calendar.

PSG will now focus entirely on their first-leg home fixture against Liverpool on 8 April, while Lens must find a way to maintain their rhythm during an unexpected mid-April hiatus.
