The blistering second-half performance extended Mbappé’s tally to 10 goals for the 2026 tournament, firmly strengthening his grip on the Golden Boot race. He sits two goals clear of Messi, who remains his closest challenger ahead of Sunday’s final between Argentina and Spain. In doing so, Mbappé has become the first player to hit double digits in a single World Cup tournament since West Germany’s Gerd Müller in 1970.
Even more staggering is the efficiency of the achievement. While Messi compiled his 21 goals across 33 matches, Mbappé reached his historic 22-goal haul in just 22 appearances. The milestone also cements his place at the absolute summit of footballing legacy, pulling clear of icons like Miroslav Klose (16 goals) and Ronaldo Nazário (15 goals).
Despite the legendary feat, the French captain cutting a bittersweet figure after the match, reflecting on the painful semifinal exit to Spain that denied them a third consecutive final appearance. Mbappé admitted he would have gladly traded the individual milestone to be playing in the showpiece event, adding that while it is an incredible legacy, the pain of the team’s defeat was the first thing on his mind.
