Real Madrid Rocked: Courtois Sidelined for Six Weeks with Muscle Tear

Thibaut Courtois suffers muscle injury in the anterior rectum of the right quadriceps and he is expected to miss around 8 games for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s title charge has hit a significant roadblock. The club confirmed on Thursday that star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has suffered a muscle injury that will keep him out of action for up to six weeks.

The injury occurred during the high-stakes Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Manchester City. Despite putting in a dominant first-half performance at the Etihad, Courtois was forced off at halftime due to discomfort in his right leg. While initial reports from the touchline suggested the substitution was a “precaution,” scans at Valdebebas have revealed a much grimmer reality.

According to the official statement released by the club:

“Following tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. His condition will be monitored.”

Crucial Games Missed

The timing could not be worse for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. A six-week layoff means Courtois is guaranteed to miss:

  • The Madrid Derby: This Sunday’s massive clash against Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
  • Champions League Quarter-finals: Both legs of the blockbuster tie against Bayern Munich.
  • La Liga Title Race: Several key domestic fixtures as Madrid looks to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Next Man Up: Andriy Lunin

With Courtois in the treatment room, the spotlight once again falls on Andriy Lunin. The Ukrainian international, who has proven himself a reliable deputy in previous seasons, will take over starting duties immediately. Lunin successfully saw out the second half against Manchester City to secure a 2-1 win (5-1 on aggregate), and his form will be vital if Madrid hopes to survive April’s brutal schedule. This injury adds to a growing list of fitness concerns for Los Blancos, who are also monitoring the recovery of Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. For Courtois, this is another frustrating setback in a career that has seen him battle back from major knee surgeries over the last two years.
