Jack Clarke struck a late equaliser for Ipswich Town to shatter Southampton’s automatic promotion dream in a breathless 2-2 draw at St Mary’s, sending the race for the second Championship promotion spot all the way to the final day.

The equation at kick-off was brutally simple — only a win for Ipswich would secure automatic promotion, and only a win for Southampton would keep their top-two hopes alive. A draw, as Kieran McKenna had warned the day before, would do little for either side. A sold-out St Mary’s, roaring from the first whistle, ensured the occasion matched the stakes.

The first half was tense and cagey, neither side willing to take risks, with tackles flying in and the crowd treating every 50-50 as a cup final moment. But the game ignited three minutes into the second half. Jacob Greaves dispossessed Tom Fellows in midfield and lifted the ball over the top, Ivan Azon nodded across the box, and Wes Burns lashed beyond Daniel Peretz to give Ipswich the lead.

The advantage lasted barely ten minutes. Greaves was booked for a lunging challenge on Finn Azaz just outside the Town box, and from the resulting free-kick, Ryan Manning’s low effort deflected off Marcelino Nunez and flew into the roof of the net via the leg of a wrong-footed Christian Walton. St Mary’s erupted, and suddenly Southampton sensed something special was possible.

Cyle Larin gave them the lead on 80 minutes, the striker bundling his way past two defenders before prodding a composed finish beyond Walton — and at that moment, promotion felt within touching distance for the hosts.

But Clarke had other ideas. The substitute composed himself after a recycled long throw fell his way and slid a precise strike into the bottom corner on 87 minutes, silencing the ground and breaking Southampton hearts in an instant. The draw leaves Ipswich a point clear in second place and sends Southampton to the play-offs, their magnificent late-season run falling just short. For McKenna’s side, the job is unfinished they will need to beat QPR on the final day to seal their return to the top flight. For Southampton, a Wembley play-off campaign now awaits. The Championship, as ever, refuses to be tamed.
