Jarrod Bowen commits to club despite Championship relegation

West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen has handed the relegated club a massive boost by committing his immediate future to the Hammers for their upcoming Championship campaign.

​The 29-year-old England forward has agreed a contract adjustment following face-to-face discussions with the club’s hierarchy, ensuring he will spearhead their push for an immediate return to the Premier League.

​Bowen, whose current deal runs until 2030, had attracted significant interest from top-flight sides including Aston Villa and Newcastle after West Ham’s 14-year stay in the Premier League ended in relegation last term.

​Despite a 3-0 victory over Leeds United on the final day of the season in May, the Hammers finished 18th after Tottenham secured a 1-0 win over Everton to survive at their expense.

​”I look in years and years to come of when I retire, what’s going to bring me the most happiness,” Bowen told West Ham’s official media channels. “For me now, that’s getting this club back into the Premier League.”

​To finalize the agreement, Bowen flew out to Prague to meet with largest shareholder Daniel Křetínský and board member Jiří Švarc. The forward admitted that hearing the owners’ vision made the choice to stay a “no-brainer.”

​The news provides a monumental lift to head coach Nuno Espírito Santo, who faces a summer of significant squad upheaval at the London Stadium.

​West Ham have already raised £85m from the sale of midfielder Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham, while heavy hitters such as Crysencio Summerville, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Jean-Clair Todibo are also expected to leave.

​Bowen’s loyalty draws immediate parallels to club legend Sir Trevor Brooking, who famously chose to stay with the Hammers following their relegation to the second tier in 1978.

​Since joining from Hull City for £22m in January 2020, Bowen has firmly cemented himself in West Ham folklore, most notably scoring the dramatic 90th-minute winner to capture the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League title.

​Despite the club’s struggles last term, the captain remained highly productive, registering 11 goals and 12 assists across 42 appearances in all competitions.

​West Ham will kick off their first Championship campaign since 2012 with a trip to face fellow relegated side Burnley on Sunday, 16 August.
