Busquets returns to Barcelona as Barca Atletic assistant coach
Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona, though this time on the touchline rather than the pitch, with the club confirming his appointment as an assistant coach with the reserve side, Barca Atletic.
A club statement read: “Sergio Busquets joins Barca Atletic as assistant coach from this Monday. The Barca legend is joining Juliano Belletti’s team to bring his experience and football knowledge to the Barca team while he completes his coaching course.”
The move brings the 38-year-old back to the club where he made his name, with Busquets a product of La Masia who broke into the first team in 2008 under Pep Guardiola, going on to make more than 700 appearances for the club and form a celebrated midfield trio alongside Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta. During his time at the club, he won La Liga nine times, the Copa del Rey seven times, and the Champions League on three occasions.
Busquets left Barcelona in 2023 after winning the La Liga title under Xavi, joining Inter Miami to link up once again with former teammate Lionel Messi. Having since retired from playing following Miami’s MLS Cup triumph, he opted to launch his coaching career back at the club that shaped him.
Working under Belletti, Busquets will gain experience across areas including weekly planning, tactical analysis, dressing-room management and the development of young players, continuing his coaching education as he currently lacks the necessary license to take charge of a first team. His return also continues a well-worn path at the club, with Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Xavi Hernandez all having made the same transition from Barcelona great to manager before him.
