Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-0 Mainz: Bolin Brace Fires Gladbach into Next Round
Borussia Mönchengladbach eased into the next round of the DFB Cup with a comprehensive 5-0 win away at Schott Mainz, with Hugo Bolin at the heart of a ruthless attacking display.
Gladbach set the tone early at the Mewa Arena, taking control of the ball and the game from the first whistle. Bolin opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing off a move set up by Philipp Sander, and the visitors doubled their advantage just three minutes later through Daiki Hashioka. Mainz went in at the break already 2-0 down and with little response to show for it.
The second half followed the same pattern, with Gladbach continuing to dominate proceedings. Bolin got his second of the afternoon in the 48th minute, this time teed up by Robin Hack, before Lukas Ullrich extended the lead further in the 61st. Wael Mohya completed the rout with a fifth goal in the 67th minute, rounding off a display in which Gladbach were as assured defensively as they were incisive going forward.
Bolin was the standout performer on the day, capping his double with two key passes and eight shots on goal, and was widely rated the best player on the pitch for a performance built on both his finishing and his creativity.
The comprehensive win sends Borussia Mönchengladbach through to the next round of the DFB Cup, while Mainz exit the competition at the first hurdle and will have plenty to reflect on after such a one-sided contest.
