Fifa launches official investigation after World Cup final incidents
Fifa has opened a formal investigation into Argentina following the post-match clashes that marred the end of the 2026 World Cup final against Spain.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory at MetLife Stadium to claim the world title, but the final whistle was overshadowed by altercations between both sets of players and staff, prompting world football’s governing body to appoint a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) faces potential financial penalties, while players and members of the coaching team could be handed international suspensions.
Tensions flared during Spain’s celebrations when Argentina defender Nahuel Molina clashed with Spanish midfielder Rodri. The altercation quickly escalated into a mass brawl involving Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, alongside Spain’s Gavi, Eric Garcia, and Dani Olmo.
Despite initial reports that Paredes had been sent off, Fifa confirmed the red card was overturned and no disciplinary action was taken against him during the match. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez was the only player sent off on the night after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time.
Under Article 13 of Fifa’s disciplinary code, penalties can be imposed for any behaviour that breaches the principles of fair play or brings the game into disrepute.
The investigation is not limited to the final. Fifa is also examining an incident in which Argentina players displayed a political banner following their semi-final victory over England, which could lead to further sanctions for the AFA.
