Nicolas Jackson: Bayern Munich will not trigger €65m buy option for Chelsea striker

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed the club will not take up their option to sign Nicolas Jackson on a permanent basis, with the striker set to return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

The Senegal international joined the German giants on a season-long loan last summer, a move designed to provide competition and cover for Harry Kane. However, despite a series of industrious performances and crucial goals—including a strike in the recent 4-3 comeback win over Mainz—the club hierarchy has decided to look in a different direction for the 2026-27 campaign.

Speaking to reporters following the club’s training session at Säbener Strasse, Eberl was candid about the decision-making process. He praised Jackson’s work rate and integration into the squad but cited the club’s long-term strategic planning as the primary reason for the parting of ways.

Nicolas is a fantastic character and a player who has given us everything on the pitch,” Eberl said. “He played a significant role during a busy period of the season and his professionalism has been exemplary. However, we have a specific profile in mind for the future of our frontline, and after internal discussions, we have informed him and his representatives that we will not be activating the purchase clause.”

Jackson’s tenure in Munich has been a mixed bag of high-energy displays and familiar frustrations in front of goal. While he endeared himself to the Allianz Arena faithful with his relentless pressing, he has struggled to maintain the clinical edge required to displace Kane or secure a regular starting spot when the squad is at full strength.

The decision marks another chapter in the striker’s search for a settled home. Having arrived at Chelsea from Villarreal in 2023, Jackson found himself surplus to requirements under the current regime at Stamford Bridge, leading to his temporary switch to Bavaria. With Chelsea expected to overhaul their own squad again this summer, his future remains clouded in uncertainty.

For Bayern, the move signals a clear intent to dip back into the transfer market. With the club aiming to maintain their dominance in the Bundesliga and reclaim their status as Champions League favorites, Eberl and manager Vincent Kompany are reportedly eyeing a younger, high-potential forward to develop alongside their established stars.

Jackson is expected to remain a part of the matchday squad for the final weeks of the season as Bayern juggle their domestic commitments with a deep run in Europe. He will leave Munich with at least one winner’s medal, but the “Jackson experiment” will ultimately be viewed as a short-term solution rather than a long-term fit for the 33-time German champions.
