Chelsea 1-0 Leeds United: Enzo Fernandez header sends Blues to FA Cup final

Chelsea moved a step closer to salvaging a turbulent season as captain Enzo Fernandez headed them into the FA Cup final with a narrow victory over Leeds United at Wembley.

In a match played against the backdrop of Liam Rosenior’s shock sacking just four days prior, the Blues found a hero in their captain. Fernandez settled a tense encounter in the 23rd minute, timing his run perfectly to meet Pedro Neto’s inviting cross and steer the ball into the bottom corner.

Interim boss Calum McFarlane, thrust into the spotlight after Rosenior’s brief three-month tenure ended abruptly on Wednesday, oversaw a performance defined by resilience rather than the flair usually associated with the London club. Having lost five successive Premier League games without scoring, this was a vital return to form for Chelsea, who now face Manchester City in the showpiece final on Saturday, 16 May.

Leeds, seeking their first FA Cup final appearance in 53 years, will feel they missed a golden opportunity to add another chapter to this historic rivalry. Daniel Farke’s side grew into the game and dominated large spells of the second half, but they were thwarted by a combination of wasteful finishing and a defiant Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea goal.

Sanchez, who had been under pressure during Chelsea’s recent slump, produced a series of vital interventions. He denied Brenden Aaronson with a sharp instinctive save early on and later produced a stunning fingertip stop to keep out a long-range “piledriver” from Anton Stach.

As the clock ticked down, Leeds threw bodies forward, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the traveling supporters on their feet when he rose highest to meet a Joe Rodon cross, only to see his header caught comfortably by Sanchez. Chelsea could have made the closing stages more comfortable had Joao Pedro’s low effort not rattled the inside of the post, but Fernandez’s solitary goal proved enough.

For Chelsea, a 17th FA Cup final appearance offers a silver lining to a chaotic season. For Leeds, the focus returns to a Premier League campaign that has exceeded expectations, but they will leave Wembley wondering what might have been had they found the clinical edge displayed by Fernandez.

Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane: “The players showed incredible character today. It’s been a difficult week for everyone at the club, but we spoke about the history of this competition and the need to give the fans something to cheer about. Enzo led by example, and while it wasn’t always pretty, we showed the grit required to win at Wembley.”

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke: “It is a painful result because I felt we were the better side for long periods. We created the chances but didn’t take them, and at this level, you get punished. I am proud of the performance, but we wanted to give our fans a final. We must take this disappointment and use it to finish our league season strongly.”
