Tottenham sign former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of experienced left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool.

The 32-year-old Scotland captain has agreed to personal terms on a deal with the North London club, bringing a highly successful nine-year spell at Anfield to a close. Robertson, who made 378 appearances for the Reds, joins Roberto De Zerbi’s side as they look to completely rebuild following a bruising Premier League campaign.

Spurs endured a deeply troubled season, only securing top-flight safety on the final day with a narrow 1-0 win over Everton to finish 17th—just two points above the relegation zone. The lack of senior leadership and consistency within the squad was heavily criticized throughout the year, making Robertson’s wealth of top-level experience a massive coup for De Zerbi.

During his glittering career on Merseyside, Robertson established himself as one of the finest left-backs in Premier League history. After joining from Hull City for an initial £8m in 2017, he went on to win two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, famously defeating his new employers, Tottenham, in the 2019 final in Madrid.

Tottenham had previously attempted to secure the defender’s services during the January transfer window. However, Liverpool blocked the mid-season switch due to their inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from a loan spell at Roma. Despite a late, concrete inquiry from Italian giants Juventus, Robertson chose to honor his verbal understanding with Spurs and remain in England.

”We are delighted to welcome Andy to the club,” Tottenham Sporting Director Johan Lange said in an official statement. “First and foremost, he is an outstanding left-back, someone who will instantly improve our squad. In addition, his quality, character, and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for—and won—major honors.”

Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi echoed those thoughts, adding: “Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years. He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him.”

While the energetic defender is no longer at the absolute physical peak that saw him top the Premier League’s sprinting data charts between 2019 and 2022, his metrics remain highly competitive. Last season, Robertson registered 35 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions. His tactical awareness, crossing accuracy, and chance creation statistics per 90 minutes actually outperformed every individual member of the Tottenham defense.

Robertson’s arrival will provide heavy competition for Destiny Udogie at left-back, while injecting much-needed elite mentality into a young dressing room. The move caps off an incredibly emotional few months for the defender, who said his final goodbyes to the Anfield crowd in May alongside fellow departing icon Mohamed Salah.

The veteran full-back will not have long to dwell on the move, as he is currently preparing to lead the Tartan Army into the 2026 FIFA World Cup—Scotland’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998. He will officially complete his registration and join up with his new Tottenham team-mates on July 1.
