Michael Carrick Appointed Manchester United Manager on Two-Year Deal

Michael Carrick has been appointed Manchester United’s permanent head coach on a two-year contract following a highly successful spell as interim boss.

The 44-year-old former United midfielder took temporary charge in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, inheriting a fractured squad sitting seventh in the Premier League.

Since then, Carrick has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround at Old Trafford, guiding the Red Devils to a third-placed finish and securing Champions League football with three games to spare. Under his stewardship, United have won 11 and drawn three of his 16 games in charge, starting with statement victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.

Carrick, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during a glittering 12-year playing career at the club, expressed his deep connection to Old Trafford upon signing the deal that runs until 2028.”

From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride,” Carrick said.”

Throughout the past five months this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here. Now it’s time to move forward together, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose.”

The decision to hand Carrick a permanent contract was spearheaded by United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, and recommended to chief executive Omar Berrada, before receiving final approval from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family.

Wilcox praised the Englishman’s immediate impact on the dressing room culture, noting that his approach perfectly aligns with the club’s historic values. Players have also been vocal in their support, with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo—who was reintegrated into the starting lineup by the new boss—stating he would “die for him on the pitch.”

This marks Carrick’s first permanent managerial position since departing Middlesbrough in 2025. He previously served as caretaker manager at United for three matches in 2021 following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With Champions League nights returning to the Theatre of Dreams next season, Carrick will now pivot his focus toward the summer transfer window, tasked with bolstering a squad to mount a serious challenge for major honours.
