Fulham 1-0 Aston Villa: Sessegnon strike dents Villa’s Champions League charge

Ryan Sessegnon’s first-half goal was enough to secure a vital victory for Fulham as Aston Villa’s hopes of moving into third place were dashed at a sun-drenched Craven Cottage.

In a match of high stakes at both ends of the table, Sessegnon pounced on a rebound in the 43rd minute after Emiliano Martínez had initially denied Saša Lukić. The win moves Marco Silva’s side level with the European spots, while Villa remain stuck in fourth, missing the chance to leapfrog Manchester United. Unai Emery’s side arrived in West London having won their last six against the Cottagers, but they lacked their usual clinical edge. Despite dominating possession in the second half, the visitors struggled to break down a resolute Fulham defense anchored by Joachim Andersen and Calvin Bassey.

Cottagers find their spark

Fulham started with the intent of a side looking to snap a two-game goal drought. Without the injured Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze was handed a start and proved a constant menace down the right flank.Villa, making four changes from the side that beat Sunderland, nearly took the lead through Morgan Rogers, who dragged a shot wide after brilliant work from John McGinn. However, the momentum shifted just before the interval. Timothy Castagne’s driven cross found Lukić, whose powerful header forced a reflex save from Martínez. The Argentine, making his 250th appearance for the club, could only parry the ball into the path of Sessegnon, who made no mistake from close range.

Villa’s frustration grows

The second half was a story of Villa pressure and Fulham persistence. Emery turned to his bench on the hour mark, introducing the likes of Jadon Sancho, Douglas Luiz, and Leon Bailey in a desperate search for an equalizer. The best chance for the visitors fell to substitute Tammy Abraham in the 84th minute. After being played through by Matty Cash, the striker had only Bernd Leno to beat but uncharacteristically lashed his effort into the side-netting.

What Next?

Villa’s disappointment must be contextualised quickly and without sentiment. They head to Nottingham Forest on Thursday for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final, then host Spurs in the Premier League next Sunday. With Villa sitting eight points clear of sixth-place Brighton, two wins from their final five games will be enough to secure Champions League qualification. The domestic picture remains favourable, and Emery’s squad of talented, battle-hardened players will refocus with ruthless efficiency. Saturday was a blip. Thursday at the City Ground is everything.

For Fulham, though, this was something far more emotionally charged. Fulham will move up to 10th, but just two points behind Brighton in sixth. The European places are no longer a mirage shimmering on a distant horizon — they are real, tangible
