Tottenham Hotspur sign Matheus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m
Tottenham Hotspur have won the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Matheus Fernandes for a fee believed to be worth a guaranteed £85m.
According to David Ornstein, Spurs outbid their rivals to land the highly-rated 21-year-old, who chose a move to north London after Tottenham lodged the highest offer.
Manchester United were also understood to be keen on the Portuguese midfielder but ultimately pulled out of the running, unwilling to match the financial package put forward by Spurs.
Fernandes has established himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest young talents following a string of impressive performances for the Hammers, attracting interest from several top clubs across Europe.
Champions League holders Real Madrid had also monitored the youngster’s situation as they look to strengthen their midfield options, but the Spanish giants were deterred by the £85m price tag.
