Millwall 0-3 Wrexham: Moore and Ekomié Seal Big Away Win

Wrexham claimed their first Championship win of the season in style, sweeping Millwall aside 3-0 at the New Den.

Alex Neil’s side were already reeling from a 5-1 hammering by Southampton at the weekend, and their previously solid defence suffered another torrid afternoon as their hopes of matching last season’s promotion push took another hit.

Having kept clean sheets in wins over Bristol City and Norwich to start the campaign, Millwall have now conceded eight goals in their last two games as Wrexham punished them with clinical finishing throughout.

Zak Sturge was unfortunate to turn Issa Kaboré’s effort into his own net in the first half, but there was nothing unfortunate about the goals that followed the break, with Kieffer Moore and Jacques Ekomié both finding the target superbly as Phil Parkinson’s side moved into the top half of the table.

The win means Wrexham have finally got their season up and running after draws with Cardiff and Watford either side of a home defeat to Birmingham.

They were the better side for long periods. Mark Sykes drilled an effort narrowly wide for Millwall after 11 minutes, in what proved to be their only real moment of threat.

At the other end, Max Cleworth headed a deep Matty James free-kick harmlessly wide, with neither side offering much in the way of quality in the opening 25 minutes.

There was a slice of fortune about the opener in the 28th minute, as Moore’s through ball sent Kaboré clear inside the box. His effort cannoned off Sturge and looped beyond the reach of goalkeeper Max Crocombe to put the visitors ahead.

Lyndon Dykes fired a half-volley wide in stoppage time at the end of a first half in which the hosts had rarely troubled Anthony Patterson.

Lewis O’Brien spurned a glorious chance to level early in the second half, scooping the ball over the crossbar from eight yards after being played in by Moore. But Millwall would not have long to dwell on that miss, as Wrexham struck again a minute later. Moore picked up the ball 20 yards out, was given time to shift it onto his right foot, and drilled a precise finish into the bottom corner.

The contest was effectively over with just over 20 minutes remaining. Substitute Danny Imray broke free down the right and pulled the ball back to the edge of the six-yard box, where Ekomié was waiting to slip away from Jake Cooper and sweep home a finish to seal the win, with home supporters heading for the exits well before the final whistle.
