Arsenal 3-0 Fulham: Gyokeres Brace and Saka Fire Gunners Six Points Clear in Premier League Title Race

Arsenal produced their most complete performance in weeks to dismantle Fulham 3-0 at a raucous Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, a result that sent Mikel Arteta’s side six points clear at the top of the Premier League with just three games of the season remaining.

It was the first time since 14 March against Everton that Arsenal had scored more than once in a game, ending a run of eight fixtures in all competitions where they had appeared sluggish and predictable in attack. There was nothing predictable about this performance. Arsenal were electric from the first whistle, pressing with intensity and moving the ball with a verve that had sometimes deserted them in recent weeks, and the return of Bukayo Saka, making his first start since the Carabao Cup final, inspired a slick attacking display that left Fulham chasing shadows for much of the contest.

Saka, who wore the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Martin Odegaard, made his presence felt from the first exchanges, cutting inside with familiar menace before threading a perfectly weighted low cross across the face of goal in the ninth minute for Viktor Gyokeres to convert with the easiest of tap-ins. It was the kind of finish that underlined why Arsenal fought so hard to sign the Swede, and he would go on to torment Fulham for the remainder of the half.

The brilliant interplay between Saka and Gyokeres had already caused Fulham several problems before the second goal arrived, and their connection was central to Arsenal’s second as well. Gyokeres held up the ball cleverly before teeing up Saka, who burst past Robinson and drilled a composed low shot into the near post in the 40th minute, giving Bernd Leno no chance. It was Saka’s first Premier League goal in eight appearances and came with the kind of emphatic certainty that suggested the England winger was very much back to his brilliant best.

The evening had not been without its frustrations. Riccardo Calafiori saw what appeared to be a goal ruled out by VAR, which confirmed he had been in an offside position. Leno also had a moment of fortune when he flapped at a Saka corner and was adjudged not to have been fouled by Gabriel as the ball fell loose, before Saka drilled a follow-up shot wide. But Arsenal’s dominance was so comprehensive that such moments barely registered. They fired 14 shots at Fulham’s goal in the first half while restricting the visitors to only two efforts from long range.

Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, Gyokeres put the outcome beyond any doubt. Fulham lost possession in front of their own box and the ball was played quickly to Leandro Trossard, who burst down the left flank and delivered a lofted cross into the penalty area. Gyokeres timed his run perfectly and guided a looping header into the top corner, leaving Leno with no chance. It was a finish of real quality, befitting one of Europe’s most in-form strikers, and it sent the Emirates into raptures at the break.

It was the first time Arsenal had been three goals ahead at half-time in a Premier League match since November 2024 against West Ham. Marco Silva’s side, whose preparations had been disrupted by a virus running through the squad, had been woeful. They offered nothing going forward and little defensive resistance either. Fulham’s dreadful away record at Arsenal now extends to 33 visits without a victory across their league history — 26 defeats and seven draws — the worst record of any side against another in away games across English Football League history.

The second half was a more muted affair, as Arteta understandably had one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg at home against Atletico Madrid. Saka was removed at half-time, a sensible piece of management to ensure the winger would be fully fit for the Atletico clash, with the Spaniard clearly confident the job was done. And so it was. Arsenal managed the game comfortably, keeping Fulham at arm’s length with minimal fuss. Gyokeres was played through with the opportunity to complete a hat-trick early in the second period but Leno, the one Fulham player to emerge with any credit, raced off his line to narrow the angle brilliantly and deny the Swede what would have been a landmark moment.

Gabriel also had a close-range effort blocked on the line, Calafiori struck the bar with a header, and substitute Max Dowman fired wide as Arsenal continued to probe without ever really shifting out of second gear. Fulham, to their credit, tried to fashion something from the wreckage in the final stages, seeing more of the ball as Arsenal conserved energy, but David Raya’s goal was never seriously threatened. Arsenal’s defence has now conceded just 11 goals at home all season, a statistic that speaks to the solidity Arteta has built throughout the campaign.

One subplot that delighted the home faithful was the performance of Myles Lewis-Skelly, the academy graduate who made his first senior start in his natural midfield position and impressed throughout, offering an additional positive for a manager who has nursed his squad through a punishing schedule. The 19-year-old played with composure far beyond his years, winning the ball, recycling possession and occasionally driving forward with purpose. He may yet have a bigger role to play before the season is out.

The result leaves Arsenal on 76 points from 35 games, six clear of Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s side have crucially played two fewer matches. The title race remains in City’s hands in the strictest mathematical sense, but an Arsenal side that looked this fluid, this clinical and this full of confidence will take some stopping. With Atletico still to come at the Emirates, and the Premier League title very much within reach, Arteta’s players have everything to play for. This was not merely a victory. It was a statement.
