Jesse Marsch’s side, cheered on by a raucous sea of red-clad fans including hockey icon Connor McDavid and actor Ryan Reynolds, looked set to slump to a frustrating seventh consecutive finals defeat. Despite dominating large periods of the Group B encounter, the Canadians fell behind midway through the first half and spent the next 50 minutes spurning a litany of golden opportunities.
The home side’s afternoon began to unravel in the 17th minute when talismanic forward Jonathan David was slipped through on goal, only to shoot straight at the alert Nikola Vasilj. It proved a costly miss, as Bosnia ruthlessly capitalised on their aerial superiority just four minutes later. Following a well-worked corner from Ivan Basic, captain Sead Kolasinac got a decisive flick at the near post, allowing Jovo Lukic to powerfully head home his first international goal to stun the home support.
Undaunted, the Canucks attacked with relentless energy but were consistently thwarted by a mix of erratic finishing and heroic Bosnian defending. Tani Oluwaseyi blazed an inviting chance over the crossbar before the break, and the frustration deepened early in the second half when Richie Laryea slipped a shot past Vasilj, only to watch in disbelief as Kolasinac produced a spectacular, goal-line clearance to deflect the ball against the crossbar.
At the other end, Canada required goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to stay sharp to block Ermedin Demirovic at point-blank range, keeping the hosts within touching distance as the clock ticked down.
With the game slipping away, Marsch threw caution to the wind and turned to his bench, a move that proved an absolute masterstroke. Larin was introduced in the 76th minute and took just 120 seconds to make his mark. Latching onto a clever pass from fellow sub Promise David at the edge of the penalty area, the Toronto native produced a brilliant turn and blasted a clinical finish into the back of the net to trigger wild celebrations along the shores of Lake Ontario.
Larin nearly completed a fairytale comeback deep into stoppage time, but his goal-bound effort was denied by a frantic block from Tarik Muharemovic, ensuring both sides walked away with a well-deserved point.
While Canada will look back at a hatful of missed chances, the dramatic draw ends a six-match World Cup losing streak dating back to 1986, securing their first-ever point on football’s grandest stage and keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds very much alive as they head to Vancouver to face Qatar.
