Man United 2-1 Brentford: Casemiro and Sesko Send Red Devils to Brink of Champions League

Manchester United moved to within touching distance of Champions League football next season after a commanding if nervy 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night, with first-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko doing enough to see off a Bees side that made them work every inch of the way.
Interim head coach Michael Carrick’s side now need a maximum of two points from their final four matches to secure a return to elite European competition for the first time since the 2023-24 season. It was not always pretty, but in a season that has demanded resilience above all else, United found a way.

The hosts were electric from the off. A glorious solo run from Kobbie Mainoo opened up the Brentford defence within two minutes, teeing up Amad Diallo from close range, only for Sepp van den Berg to clear brilliantly off the line. Old Trafford was roaring, and the opening goal felt inevitable. It duly arrived in the 11th minute. Bruno Fernandes delivered a deep corner that Maguire headed back across goal, and the ever-reliable Casemiro was positioned perfectly at the back post to nod home his ninth Premier League goal of the season.
Brentford were not without their moments. Igor Thiago was twice played clean through on goal and twice failed to convert, with a combination of the outstanding Ayden Heaven and goalkeeper Senne Lammens denying him on both occasions. It was the kind of wastefulness that would ultimately cost Keith Andrews’ side dearly.
United punished them just before the interval. A sharp counter-attack led by Fernandes found Sesko, who showed composure beyond his years to turn Nathan Collins before smashing home his tenth Premier League goal of the season. Two goals to the good at the break, the points looked secure.
Carrick switched to a back five at half-time, which reduced United’s attacking threat but effectively strangled Brentford’s momentum, with Dango Ouattara squandering a glorious chance when he headed against the post from close range.
The visitors did pull one back when Mathias Jensen unleashed a spectacular long-range strike in the 87th minute to set up a frantic finish, but United held on with relative composure.Fernandes recorded his 19th Premier League assist of the season in the process, leaving him just one short of the all-time single-season record jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. On a night of significant progress, that milestone felt entirely fitting for the man driving United’s revival.
