Marcelo Bielsa resigns as Uruguay manager
Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as manager of Uruguay following their early exit from the 2026 World Cup.
The veteran coach announced his departure during a post-match press conference, expressing deep sorrow over the conclusion of his tenure with La Celeste.
”For me, it’s clear that this ending is very painful due to the high hopes I had when I took on this project, and because of the unfortunate way it concluded,” Bielsa said.
The former Leeds United manager stated he felt a immense responsibility towards his staff and squad, praising the exceptional sacrifice and work ethic shown by his players throughout his tenure.
Bielsa also categorically dismissed modern media rumours of a rift with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.
”I have never had any problems with Valverde at all,” Bielsa clarified. “I have not made concessions to any player more than I have to Valverde, because he deserves it.”
In an emotional disclosure, Bielsa revealed that veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera had asked to be substituted at half-time during their match against Spain following a costly mistake, having battled a high fever the day before the game.
”At half-time, Muslera told me he was extremely upset about the mistake he made to the extent that he preferred not to play,” Bielsa said. “I believe this act was extremely generous and selfless, which is rare in modern football.”
