In what was supposed to be a triumphant home send-off at De Kuip ahead of their trip to North America, the lacklustre Oranje dominated possession but were severely punished for their profligacy in front of goal. The hosts’ frustration culminated in the 86th minute when Hadj Moussa drifted in from the right flank and unleashed a spectacular, curling left-footed effort into the top left corner to snap the Netherlands’ 10-match unbeaten streak.

It will be an incredibly bittersweet night for Koeman, whose team registered 14 shots but failed to break down a resilient, heavily rotated Algerian backline. The Dutch had standard textbook control of the early exchanges, with Donyell Malen striking the woodwork and Tijjani Reijnders seeing a goal ruled out for offside after excellent link-up play from debutant Crysencio Summerville. Despite generating numerous clear-cut opportunities, the hosts lacked a clinical edge in the final third.

Seeking answers, Koeman made wholesale changes at the interval, withdrawing captain Virgil van Dijk and introducing the likes of Memphis Depay, Justin Kluivert, and back-up goalkeeper Robin Roefs. The tactical shift failed to yield the desired breakthrough, running into an absolute brick wall in the form of Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who produced a string of world-class saves to keep the home side at bay.

As the match seemed destined for a goalless stalemate, Algeria capitalised on their rare attacking foray. A crisp pass from former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb picked out Hadj Moussa, who clinically manufactured enough yardage to bypass the tracking Dutch defenders and leave Roefs with absolutely no chance.

With their opening World Cup Group F clash against Japan looming later this month, the Netherlands have plenty of soul-searching to do. Koeman’s side will have one final chance to iron out their defensive lapses and misfiring frontline when they face Uzbekistan in their final warm-up fixture before heading across the Atlantic.
