Al-Ittihad Stun Al-Qadisiyah Despite Red Card

Al-Ittihad produced a stunning smash-and-grab win over Al-Qadisiyah, edging out a contest they were comprehensively outplayed in thanks to a stoppage-time first-half goal and a heroic goalkeeping display.

The breakthrough came in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, when G. Ilenikhena finished off a well-worked team move to give Al-Ittihad the lead a sucker-punch for a Qadisiyah side that had dominated the opening 45 minutes, controlling 66% of possession and firing off 26 shots to their opponents’ five.

The complexion of the match shifted again just two minutes into the second half, when Al-Ittihad’s D. Lopy was shown a straight red card. Rather than folding under the numerical disadvantage, though, Al-Ittihad found their platform in goalkeeper Predrag Rajković, who produced a man-of-the-match display, making eight saves to finish with a rating of 9.7 and repelling wave after wave of Qadisiyah pressure.

For all their control of the ball, Qadisiyah simply couldn’t find a way through. Their expected-goals tally of 2.46 told its own story of a side that created enough to win comfortably, yet lacked the cutting edge in the final third to make it count summed up by an offside goal ruled out for J. Quinones in the first half, and 15 corners won without reward. Al-Ittihad, by contrast, managed the game clinically, converting a meagre expected-goals return of just 0.25 into all three points.

The result carries real weight in the table. Al-Ittihad, who went into the match in ninth place with a single point to their name, move to within touching distance of the Champions League qualification places. Qadisiyah, meanwhile, who arrived with high expectations for the campaign, stay on three points in fourth, and will feel real pressure to put this result behind them quickly in their coming fixtures.
