Memphis Depay Agrees Contract Renewal with Corinthians Until 2028
Memphis Depay has agreed a new two-year contract with Corinthians, extending his stay at the Brazilian club until the middle of 2028, after a dramatic week of public wrangling over his future.
Club president Osmar Stabile confirmed the deal on Monday night, bringing an end to a saga that had threatened to see the Dutch forward leave Parque São Jorge. The announcement followed an intense, week-long public feud that erupted after Depay’s original two-year contract, signed when he joined the club in 2024, expired.
The extension was rescued after the 32-year-old agreed to a significant reduction in his financial demands, in line with the club’s sustainability targets, cutting the overall value of his package by roughly €5m. As part of the restructuring, Depay agreed to waive close to €2.9m of the money he was previously owed by the club, with the remaining balance to be paid in four instalments starting in January 2027. A strict penalty clause means Corinthians would forfeit that discount entirely should any of the payments be delayed. The full agreement is reported to be worth around €22.4m over the two years.
The breakthrough marks a striking reversal from the situation just over a week earlier, when Corinthians issued a statement on 11 August saying they would not be extending Depay’s contract, citing concerns over the club’s financial stability and internal disagreements. The forward responded angrily on social media, accusing board members of reneging on terms he said had already been approved by the club’s legal, sporting and financial departments, and warned he would not let the matter rest quietly.
Facing mounting pressure from supporters, Stabile reopened negotiations, and the two sides ultimately found a path back to an agreement. Depay is expected to report for training at CT Joaquim Grava, where he will link up again with head coach Fernando Diniz as the club prepares for its upcoming fixtures.
The timing is significant, with Corinthians in the midst of the Copa Libertadores knockout stages, and the club will be hopeful of having their talisman available for selection in the near term.
Since arriving in Brazil, Depay has made 79 appearances for Corinthians, scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists, while helping the club lift the Campeonato Paulista, the Copa do Brasil and the Supercopa do Brasil. His performances have made him one of the most influential figures in the squad, and Monday’s resolution secures his central role in Corinthians’ plans through to 2028.
